While black tie can just mean "dressed up" by some, here is the technical definition: Black Tie means formal. Men wear tuxedos, women wear cocktail dresses, long dresses or dressy evening separates.

"Black Tie" is a dress code. It means that the men should be showing up in tuxedos not suits and the ladies should be wearing a formal gown or dress.

It means something very elegant. To be on the safe side, owning a street length black dress is THE staple of every woman's wardrobe. It goes with just about every situation. When you wear a simple choker or strand of pearls, with pearl earrings, you have it made. Choosing the right heel with the situation helps keep the dress right too (pumps, heels or sandals). You can never go wrong wearing a long black dress to a black tie event. <*)))><

Not just a "kind of fancy" one, but a very formal one. Very dressy. Black tie is not a causual event or dinner.

When I go to a "black tie" event, I simply wear a black tie and only a black tie. Nothing more. But after reading the other answers on here, I now realize why they never let me stay very long. I always thought it was kind of dum to tell people to wear a black tie then have them arrested for it when they arrive at the event. Oh well, I learn something new everyday!

black tie describes a style that is formal, the attendee should wear at the most a ballgown (expensive)or at the very least a cocktail dress which is usually lower priced.

Cocktail dress. Think very dressy, classic black, sequins. Here is the time to show off. Women definitely have a lot more creative license here than men.

Have fun!
